How to transfer an image from the screen of one computer to another (from laptop to laptop)

User question

Hello.

I have several computers at home, and sometimes I would like to receive an image from one of them on the screen of another (a kind of broadcast). Tell me how this can be done?

Hello.

On the one hand, the question is quite specific (popular and practical), on the other hand, in order to answer it, you need to know a number of conditions about which the author of the question said nothing ...

Based on this, below I will recommend several ways to solve such a problem. I think there will be plenty to choose from ... 😉

How to broadcast a screen image from a phone (tablet) to a computer / laptop (wirelessly, via Wi-Fi)

*

Screencasting methods: computer to computer

Option 1: connect wirelessly in Windows 10

Conditions: both computers must have a Wi-Fi adapter (laptops have it built in), and a modern version of Windows 10 1809+ must be installed

*

The "relatively new" version of Windows 10 Pro has the ability to project (ie, a laptop / PC can become a wireless display and receive an image with sound).

For settings this opportunity:

  1. need to open Windows 10 settings (combination Win + i);
  2. go to section "System / project to this computer" ;
  3. disable PIN and allow to connect "Everywhere" ;
  4. run the application (arrow-3 in the screenshot below 👇).

Note: if all the settings in this section are "gray" and cannot be changed, see the complete instructions for setting up the wireless display (👇).

launching the configuration application on this PC

Ready for wireless connection

After that, you need to go to the second computer / laptop and click on the function "connect" (alternative is to press Win + P, and activate the search function for wireless displays).

Connection

Then select "our" display from the list and agree to pairing.

Click on the found display

Woo-a-la, after 5-10 sec. the picture with sound will start feeding from one computer to another (broadcast). Our task is completed ?! 😉

Photo (screen "extended"): of course, the laptop can be placed further from the current computer

Option 2: using a video adapter to capture

An image with sound can also be broadcast from one computer to another using a special. video capture cards (HDMI variants are most often used).

Note: a video capture card is purchased separately (such a thing is rarely built into the basic configuration of PCs / laptops). By the way, you can buy it at bargain prices, for example, in 👉 Chinese online stores.

*

How it all looks in practice:

  1. a cable is connected to one of the ports on the computer's video card (for example, to HDMI) (as for connecting a monitor);
  2. then this cable is connected not to the monitor, but to the special. video capture adapter (and the adapter itself is usually connected to the USB port of another computer);
  3. then specials are launched on it. utility, and it starts displaying everything that is fed to the video capture adapter (of course, the image can even be recorded).

By the way, as such a special. Utilities are often the OBS Studio program. I have a separate blog post on tuning and optimizing it.

The photo below shows an example of connecting a laptop to a PC (via HDMI).

More details on how to set up video capture and broadcasting of an image is described in one of my past notes, the link to which is given below.

Option 3: using utilities for remote access (or employee control)

There are a number of programs that allow you to connect from one computer to another via the Internet. Of course, when connected, you can see everything that happens on the desktop of another device (and even control it!).

The best programs to connect to another computer over the Internet (remote access is easy!)

*

In this regard, I am very impressed with the program. AnyDesk ... Having installed it on both computers and having configured it once, you can quickly (within literally 3-6 seconds) gain access to the desktop of another computer.

Of course, you can use it at home too, even if your PC is in the next bedroom. 😉

"Alien" desktop ... Now we can control this PC remotely ... (well, or just watch 😉)

By the way, for this business, you can also adapt some utilities to control the work of employees (however, they are mostly paid). For example, Clever Control (👇) makes it easy to get an image from both the desktop and the computer's webcam (even over the network ...).

Option 4: capture your desktop and broadcast video over the Internet

Well, the last option, which I will talk about today, is the usual video broadcast to the network, which was filmed from the desktop. With the help of specials. utilities can do this in auto mode.

In my example, I will show how this can be done using the 👉 VLC player (fortunately, many already have it ...).

*

1) After installing and launching the player - open the tab "Media / Transfer" .

Transfer / VLC

2) Next in the tab "Capture devices" need to put "Screen" , specify the frame rate (10-60 fps) and click on "Flow" .

Flow

3) For the broadcast method, select "HTTP" and press "Add" (port 8080 can be left unchanged and pressed immediately "Following" ).

HTTP add

4) As a profile for video encoding - I recommend setting 1080P (MPEG 4).

Selecting a video profile

5) Everything! The broadcast should now go online.

But in order to connect to it, 👉 you need to find out the IP address of this computer (on which we configured VLC 👆).

To do this, it is convenient to use the Speccy utility (👇) - it will immediately show both the local IP (for connecting from a local network) and external IP - for connecting to the broadcast over the Internet.

Speccy - view IP-addresses, Network section

*

Now, knowing the IP address of the computer on which the broadcast is running, you can go to another PC from which we will view (open) it.

We also install and run VLC on it - tab "Media / Open URL" .

Open URL / VLC

Further, in the network tab, you need to specify the following as the address:

  1. //192.168.0.107:8080 (of course, instead of "192.168.0.107" - you will need to insert your IP).

Play network address

Then the player will start playing the broadcast (👇). In general, the problem is solved ?!

It’s gone!

Additions on the topic are welcome!

Good luck!
