How to put an em dash (in Word and not only)

Good day!

During normal work on a PC, instead of a dash, you can put a minus sign, and just a hyphen, and even some kind of squiggle, so that your interlocutor understands you correctly. But when drawing up a number of documents, you need to be more specific and correct: somewhere to put a hyphen, and somewhere an em dash.

But that's bad luck, there is no em dash on the keyboard, and how to put it is a big question for many users (in fact, this is how this topic was born ✌, since I periodically answer such questions).

By the way, at the beginning of the article I decided to indicate a couple of methods that work not only in MS Word (since not all documents are drawn up in this text editor).

And so, now closer to solving the issue ...

Ways to put a dash

Method 1 (universal): using auto-replace

I am very impressed with the way to automatically replace two-hyphens with one em dash (in fact, I use this myself). Moreover, it works in all applications (not just in Word).

In order to implement this, you need to install one small utility that serves to auto-detect the keyboard layout - Punto Switcher (an indispensable thing for those who work a lot with text).

After installing it, a small icon with the language display will appear in your system tray. Right-click on it and enable "auto-switch" , then open it customization (see screenshot below).

Punto Switcher Settings

Then go to the section "Auto-replace" and create a rule ("Add" button) so that two minus / hyphens "-" are replaced by one em dash "-". After that, I also recommend that you also check the box next to the items:

  1. replace by pressing Enter or TAB;
  2. replace by pressing the "Space" key.

As a result, thanks to this rule, as soon as you write two hyphens and press a space, you will immediately have an em dash. Saving time on the face!

I will also add that you can create rules for more interesting replacement options ...

Method 2

This method works in many text editors (including Word), but it is not suitable for everyone - for example, laptops do not always have a numeric keypad ...

To put an em dash: hold down left Alt and type 0151 on the digital block! See the arrows in the photo below.

Hold Left Alt and dial 0151 on the number pad!

Method 3

Write the number 2014 in Word, and then press the combination Alt + X - as a result, this number will be automatically replaced by a dash. This "thing" works in all modern versions of Word.

Note: to insert a shorter dash - write 2013 and press Alt + X.

Immediately after typing 2014 press Alt + X - only works in Word

Method 4

Need to clamp right Alt and then press minus on the digital block (note: this method only works in Word) .

Alternative option: pinch Ctrl + Alt (at least left, at least right) and click on minus (on the digital block).

Method 5

Go to Word'e section "insert" and click on the link "Other characters" in the tab "Symbols" ... See screenshot below.

Next, specify the display punctuation marks , select the dash you want, and press "Paste" ... Please note that the em dash character code is 2014 (we used it in the previous method).

Dash will be inserted!

By the way, also note that you do not have to manually open the entire table of signs every time and look for the same dash there again - just click on the tab "Symbols" and you will see all previously inserted characters.
