How to speed up Google Chrome (for those who have a slow browser)

Good day!

Be that as it may, and with the advent of the accessible Internet for the majority of the population, the browser has become one of the most popular programs. And one of the fastest and most popular browsers is Google Chrome! 😎

And if you also count how many browsers work on his engine, then I think the leader is beyond doubt ...

Actually, quite often many users are faced with the fact that Chrome slows down, works with delays and lags (sometimes a simple page load takes several tens of seconds ...).

In this article, I will give several ways on how you can speed up your Chrome browser (or any other running on the same engine). I do not pretend to be the truth in the first instance, and yet ... 👌

Practical tips to speed up Chrome

STEP 1: clearing cache and history

As you use the browser, a large number of different entries begin to accumulate in its "bowels" ("rubbish"): uploaded images, cache, cookies, auto-fill data, etc.

All this "goodness" can often take up several gigabytes of hard disk space (and even more! - which, of course, affects the performance of the browser, and the system as a whole).

To avoid the "extra" brakes associated with this "garbage" - from time to time, I recommend cleaning and removing such "stuff" ...

How to do it

First go to the browser settings and find the section "Personal data" ... Click on the button "Clear the history" .

You can just press the combination Ctrl + Shift + Del, or open the page chrome: // settings / clearBrowserData

After, you need to put a few checkboxes "Browsing history", "Cookies and other site data",   "Images and other saved files in the cache" , select mode "During all this time" and delete it all!

By the way, there are special utilities for automatically removing garbage from the browser and the system (I recommend it!).

STEP 2: the latest version of the browser?

Probably, this advice will seem banal to some, and yet - check version browser, is it the latest at the moment, are there any updates.

The easiest way to do this is by opening the help page. You need to copy to the address bar of your browser: chrome: // settings / help

Next, you will find out if you have the latest version of your browser. Ideally, you should have something like "You are using the latest version of Chrome" ... If not, please update your browser!

STEP 3: block aggressive ads

It is worth notingthat very often the browser slows down due to the huge amount of ads on the site you are viewing (especially, aggressive: when your tabs start to open randomly, there is a redirect from one page to another, etc.).

Very A good solution to get rid of such ads is the 👉 Adguard application (it automatically blocks all unwanted ads, while leaving you room for whitelisting ...).

Note: Adguard application does not need to be configured, after installation it will automatically start filtering all browsers and programs on your PC. Conveniently! 👇

👉 Additionally!

If the proposed measures did not help to get rid of the "viral" advertising, I recommend that you use the system cleaning method from this article.

STEP 4: How many tabs are open? Are they all needed?

Many users open dozens of tabs in the browser (while playing a game and recording a video). Moreover, it would not be so sad if it was still really needed ... 👀

In fact, with each open tab in the browser, the amount of RAM it uses increases, and the load on the CPU sometimes grows very significantly. It is not surprising that the browser starts to slow down with terrible force.

👉 To help!

The Google Chrome browser loads the processor (CPU) up to 99-100%

Note. On my PC with 16 GB of memory when 100 tabs are open, there is significant discomfort ... The solution is simple: I do not open more than 50, although in most cases their number can be reduced to 10. 👌

Dozens of open tabs ... Naturally, the browser will slow down more and more, with each new open tab ...

To close the open current tab - press the combination of buttons Ctrl + W .

To close several tabs at once (for example, all tabs, or all tabs to the right of the current one) - right-click in the top menu on the current tab, and select the required one. See screenshot below.

STEP 5: remove unnecessary extensions (many don't even know about them!)

Each browser extension added and installed usually requires separate resources. Sometimes, such an extension is updated in the background, transfers some statistical data, etc. - i.e. loads the system and the network (sometimes, very significantly!). All this is not good and affects the speed of the browser ...

By the way! Interestingly, many users do not even know that they have dozens of extensions installed in their browser ... 👀

Now I will tell you one more thing, an interesting statistic - many users use some of the extensions from a big case to a big one. Do you need to keep each such extension enabled?

👉 In my opinion, everything unnecessary and rarely used should be either removed or disabled, until the next appropriate case ...

👉 Extension page address: chrome: // extensions

There are two options for each extension:

  • enable / disable the extension;
  • remove extension.

In general, everything is unnecessary disconnect or delete!

STEP 6: enable faster page loading

The browser has functionwhich allows you to preload pages, making them open significantly faster.

To use this feature, open browser settings (settings page address: chrome: // settings / , at the bottom of the page, click the link "Show advanced settings " ).

Further in the section "Privacy and Security" check the box next to "Allow page preloading ..." . 👇

In addition, I recommend unchecking the box Spell Checker in subsection "Languages" (in some cases it has a big impact on performance).

STEP 7: check internet speed, DNS

I want to point out one more point - very often it is not the Chrome browser itself that slows down, but the Internet. Due to the fact that packets are lost, the data "does not arrive" - you may not load this or that page for tens of seconds (which is very annoying 👀).

Regarding the Internet speed test - I have one big article on my blog that is completely devoted to this issue. I recommend that you familiarize yourself with it and check your network. Link below.

How to find out the real Internet speed - an easy way to check

👉 Also it's worth saying a few words about DNS servers ...

The fact is that when you open any page in the browser (i.e. follow the link, or manually specify the URL) - first, your PC sends a request to the DNS server (i.e. asks it: "where is located site "), that, having looked in its database for the IP-address of the site, answers it and indicates by which IP the site is located. And after that, at the specified IP-address, the browser loads the page.

The biggest catch is that most users use DNS from the provider (which often work extremely poorly, and it would be highly desirable to replace them with DNS from Google, for example). This is done quickly - 5 minutes. (help link below)! 👇

STEP 8: choosing a browser theme

Browser theme can also have, in some cases, a fairly significant effect on the speed of his work(especially if you get a "curve").

Therefore, if your browser slows down - I recommend trying to restore the default theme - it is the most optimized and creates the minimum load on your PC.

To change the theme: open the browser settings, and in the subsection "Appearance" click on the button "Restore default theme" ... Everything! The topic should have changed within 1-2 seconds.

👉 Note: you can also change the browser appearance settings by following the URL: chrome: // settings / appearance

STEP 9: some more tips

1) One more point: it is possible that Google Chrome is too demanding for your old computer, and you should try using lighter browser?

There are several browsers that are less demanding than Chrome. I wrote about them in one of my past notes (link below).

2) By the way, specials help to speed up the work in the browser. keyboard shortcuts, for example:

  • Ctrl + W - close the tab;
  • Ctrl + T - open a new tab;
  • Ctrl + Shift + T - open the last closed tab;
  • Ctrl + Shift + Del - clear cache, etc. 👇
