Most often this happens due to the settings of the explorer (for example, many optimize the laptop for maximum performance, and as a result, ordinary icons are displayed instead of thumbnails). Most likely, your Windows OS was optimized in a similar way.
Below I will consider options for what you can do.

Why are thumbnails (previews) for pictures / videos not displayed?

And so, in order to change the performance parameters (and at the same time displaying previews for pictures), you first need to open "This computer" ("My Computer") and go to it properties ... To do this, just right-click on the PC icon, or in any free space in the window ...

Then open the performance options.

Set the slider to mode "Restore defaults" (while checking that there is a check mark next to the item Display thumbnails instead of icons ). See example below.

The next point to pay attention to is the type of displayed icons (Windows provides several options: table, list, regular icons, etc.). If, for example, a table is used, then the thumbnails are not displayed in it!
To clarify this point, open any of the folders on the disk, and go to the menu "View" (how it looks in Windows 10 is presented below). Then open the file explorer options (combination of Win + R, and then the command control folders).

On the menu "View" check that there is NOT a tick next to the item "Always display icons, not thumbnails" .

It is possible that the conductor is just "buggy". Try restarting it.
To do this, open the task manager (combination Ctrl + Alt + Del, or Ctrl + Shift + Esc), find the process named "Conductor" and restart it (example in the screenshot below).

If you do not see previews of pictures from the internal memory of the phone, camera and other audio / video devices, it is possible that the reason is the lack of rights (the device limits the capabilities of Windows so that you do not delete something unnecessary with careful actions ...) ...
To solve the problem, you can do the following:
- copy all files from the phone (for example) to the PC / laptop disk and calmly continue working with them (how to do it);
- upload a photo from your phone to a cloud drive (you can work with it from any device and all previews are displayed);
- if the photos are located on an SD card, then you can simply connect it to the PC directly (via a card reader) and view all the contents. The card reader can be purchased on AliExpress, for example ...

It is possible that your pictures are simply "broken" (for example, the flash drive or the disk on which they are located has become unusable and some of the files have become unreadable).

What can be done if the above does not work
In some cases, it is not possible to restore the normal operation of Explorer (for example, this may be due to the fact that you do not have an official version of Windows, but a "build" from the craftsmen).
In this case, as an option, you can use alternatives to the conductor - viewers (special programs for viewing and editing pictures, photos, and other media files). They will not only show thumbnails for pictures, but also do it for video files, archives, etc. I recommend!
