What to do if the joystick does not work in games

User question

Hello.

Tell me why the joystick may not work. On the computer, I have everything OK with it, but when I connect to a laptop, nothing happens, the game does not seem to see it (I think that the matter is in the OS, on the PC it costs 10, and on the laptop 7).

{the rest of the question is stripped ...}

Good day!

Perhaps the matter is in the version of Windows OS (or even some errors), but if you answer "with a swoop", then I am more inclined to lack driver on the joystick (10 by default finds and installs drivers for most devices, unlike 7 ...).

In general, I would recommend to "go over" the list below (the note will be universal for everyone who is faced with a similar question ...).

So...

*

How to start "configuring" the joystick

First, close all the games and applications for which you connected the joystick ... (we won't need them until the 4th step) 😉

❶

Checking device status

No matter how trite it is, but first, carefully examine the joystick itself: is it intact? the wire , are there any kinks on it (most often they go to the "kink" of the place near the USB).

If you have a wireless joystick - replace batteries (by the way, if you leave the batteries in the device case for a long time and do not use it, they can oxidize, which can spoil some of the elements inside the case ...).

The joystick has been repaired

It is highly advisable to double-check the joystick on another PC / laptop / phone. Is he a worker at all ...? By the way, many joysticks have LEDs that can tell whether the gamepad is still alive ... 👇

When connected to USB, the LED on the joystick began to light up

Driver availability

Usually, the "new" Windows 10 OS automatically installs drivers for most joysticks (which cannot be said about other OS). But in some cases this may not happen ...

In any case, I recommend going to the 👉 device manager and see if there are any devices with exclamation marks in it (for example, in the 👇 "Other devices" ).

Other devices - update driver / device manager

👉 If if you have a "native" driver for the joystick (for example, a CD / USB flash drive that came with it) - install the driver from them.

👉 By the way, in the device manager, you can try to update the driver manually: to do this, first click on the button "Update hardware configuration" , and then click RMB on the desired device and in the menu, specify "Update driver" .

Then agree to automatically search for and install the driver ...

How to update the driver in device manager

👉 If a the driver could not be updated, I recommend the following:

  1. utility for automatic driver search;
  2. search for a driver by hardware code (manually).

*

👉 Besides, you can try to transfer the driver from another Windows (if suddenly you have a PC with a different version of Windows, where the joystick works (like the author of the question)). How to do this - see the note below.

Whether the joystick is visible by means of Windows OS

For such a check, we need to open the tab device and printer management (to do this, you can use the 👉 control panel, or press Win + R, and use the command control printers ).

control printers - view connected devices

Among the devices, you need to find a joystick, click on it with RMB (right mouse button) and open it parameters .

Game device parameters

Then go to the tab "Properties / Validation" and try to push alternately on the everything joystick buttons.

Joystick properties

If the joystick is working properly and the driver is correctly installed on it, you should see the buttons start blinking on the check screen (see the screen below 👇). Ideally, when you press any of the buttons, you should see a reaction ...

when the button is pressed

👉 Important!

Of course, until Windows begins to respond to pressing the joystick buttons, it makes no sense to go to the game settings! (they won't see him either ...)

By the way, if a number of buttons did not work for you, try to calibrate the gamepad (this is done in the same window, but in a different tab - "parameters" , see the screen below).

Game Compatibility

Not all games can use ordinary universal joysticks: some need special ones. gamepads. And a number of games do not support joysticks at all (in principle, this is simply not provided by the developers). This usually happens with old games ...

To use a classic joystick - in such cases, you can resort to two options:

  1. if there is a special for the game. add-ons / plugins (eliminating this drawback) - to use them (no comments here 👌);
  2. install and configure specialist. utility , which will "convert" all your presses on the joystick buttons into keystrokes on the keyboard. Those. the game will "think" that you are playing the keyboard ...

*

Decision the second option (in my opinion) - it is better to entrust the utilityJoyToKey: It is compatible with most games and joysticks, profiles can be created for each game, it can easily handle even multiple joysticks, and it works with Windows 7/8/10. ✌
