What is an RSS feed or how to view new entries from several sites at once (subscription to tens or hundreds of resources)

Good day!

Many have heard about RSS, often see this abbreviation on sites, but to the end what it is, what it is "eaten" with, and what benefit it can give - they do not know!

I'll try to explain it on my fingers ... Imagine, here you like some site - you have added it to your browser bookmarks, and you visit it regularly so as not to miss anything. Over time, you found for yourself fifty more interesting sites, and also added them to your bookmarks. Do you think that visiting 50 sites in a day is convenient (and if you need to do it every day)?

It would be another matter if someone visited all these sites for you and presented you with a list of all new entries / articles on them ?! Conveniently? Actually, an RSS feed is a special tool on sites that allows you to view all their new entries in aggregates for reading (in common people they are called RSS-readers or readers).

Probably, many have seen the characteristic RSS icon on many sites (including my ).

Rss icon

An example of an RSS reader is presented below: by going into it, you immediately see a list of all the entries on your selected sites. Thus, do not miss any news (readers allow you to sort and group them by date, by resource, by author, by criteria that you create yourself).

And so, now about the most interesting thing - where is it better to collect news from sites and read their article titles (or even whole articles).

How and where to read RSS feeds

In my humble opinion, aggregators (or readers) in the form of separate sites (resources) are the most convenient: you registered once on them and then only gradually add new resources and read the news. Moreover, you can enter them both from your phone and from a PC (and you don't need to install anything else!).

***

How to use: as a rule, it is enough to register in one of the aggregators, then copy the link to the RSS feed and paste it into the aggregator. Everything! Then the aggregator "eats" it and will present information.

Below is a screenshot showing 3 steps to start reading my site in the Inoreader ...

Three steps and you can read the news

Inoreader (aggregator)

What the reader window looks like

An excellent RSS aggregator with a wide range of features. It is distinguished by its ease of use, several themes (light + dark), the ability to present articles in several forms: just headings, cards (as in the screenshot above), a list. The reader has a favorites function for recordings that you want to read later.

There are many display settings

Features:

  1. unlimited number of RSS feeds that you can add;
  2. all tapes can be divided into different categories (for example, computers, finance, about life, etc.);
  3. several themes and options for displaying new entries (see screen above);
  4. there are extensions for browsers Chrome and Firefox;
  5. there are applications for Android and iOS;
  6. import of the list to subscribed sites from other aggregators.

By the way, this reader also has a paid version (although, in my opinion, it's enough for "eyes" for free).

Feedly (aggregator)

Feedly home page

One of the most popular readers! Simple, convenient, fast, it has become a kind of standard. Allows you to easily add (import) tapes from other readers.

In my opinion, Feedly still has one significant drawback: when you go to a page for collecting RSS feeds, it does not always open immediately: it happens that a window pops up (instead of a list of recent publications) ... which, you have to do extra "action".

Features:

  1. you can add only 100 RSS feeds to the reader for free;
  2. there are several options for presenting news - you can view only headlines (a kind of list of recent posts), or you can write a short entry: headline, preview picture, first few sentences (see the screen above);
  3. there are browser extensions;
  4. the ability to divide all sources into different categories (for example, economics, home advice, fishing, etc.);
  5. the ability to save news on boards (favorites);
  6. sending readable news to social. networks (auto-publish).

Newsflow (app)

Website: //www.microsoft.com/

Main application window

A great Windows 10 app for reading RSS feeds. Newsflow integrates into the system, and you will see about new messages in your feeds, for example, in the START menu (or by notification in the tray).

Note that in the application you can adjust the size of the font, headings, etc. points for easy reading (you can read the full news without leaving the program).

Features:

  • unlimited number of added RSS feeds;
  • the ability to play videos from popular video hosting (YouTube, for example);
  • there is a special. function for viewing full news without leaving the application;
  • the ability to search for interesting feeds by keywords;
  • the ability to import / export readable RSS;
  • well thought-out interface, very convenient integration into Windows 10.
  • Minus # 1: there is no synchronization of what has been read from a PC and from a mobile device (somewhat inconvenient);
  • Minus number 2: no highlighting of unread news.

Feed Reader (program)

Website: //www.feedreader.com/

Main Feed Reader Window

Despite the fact that this program has not been updated for a long time, it is still quite popular for reading RSS. The program is free, supported by all the most modern operating systems Windows 7, 8, 10.

Created by Estonian developers, it supports many languages (including Russian). You can create your favorite feed, and it is easy to find out about all the news on your favorite sites. The application works flawlessly, I recommend it!

Opera browser

Official website: //www.opera.com/ru

Opera - personalized news

A good RSS feed reader is built into the Opera browser (in the side menu "Personalized news"):

  • you can already read fifty sites that the browser will select for you based on your preferences, where you can find out about all the news in the World, country;
  • but you can create your own personal feed.

The reader is very simple: just indicate the main page of the site that you want to add to the feed, and the browser itself will find it RSS and add it to your reader. The reader, by the way, is made in the style of minimalism: you just see the title, a short writing and a preview picture (if there is one ...).

Readiy (application)

Website: //www.microsoft.com/

Readiy - what the application looks like

Very fast and simple reader. Its interface is not much different from the rest of Windows 10 applications (ie in the modern tiled "genre", therefore, it can be used on tablets running this system).

Among the significant disadvantages: there are no broad filtering settings for incoming information (therefore, if you have a lot of sites in your subscriptions, I think it will not be very comfortable to work with this application).

Note: Synchronization with Feedly is possible.

That's all. For additions on the topic - a separate merci ...

All the best!
