Stutters and slows down YouTube videos on a tablet, smartphone [on Android]

Good time!

Most users actively use tablets (and smartphones) to watch online videos (most often from YouTube). And it is very convenient - it is not necessary to sit at the PC when you can comfortably lie down with the tablet in your hands ...

But since tablets do not shine with performance, you can often observe various slowdowns, freezes, video can twitch and stutter (which is very annoying, and sometimes makes it impossible to view).

In this article, I will provide simple and realistic ways to improve the quality of the video being played. I think some of the ways should help you!

So...

How to improve video playback

Note! If your tablet is already old enough and has less than 1 GB of RAM (512 MB *), then playing high-quality videos on YouTube is, I'm afraid, an overwhelming task for him. Of course, you can try the recommendations below, but I would not have much hope ...

How much RAM and how much of it is free / Settings -> Applications -> Working

About standard applications (YouTube / Browser)

Most tablets / smartphones have a dedicated YouTube app preinstalled, and this is where most of the videos open. I must say right away that it is far from ideal: firstly, it is demanding on the resources of the device (there are more "economical" applications), and secondly, advertising constantly appears (after certain periods of time). Therefore, I would not recommend using it at all ...

YouTube app

I would also note the standard browser (which is called "Browser") on tablets: subtitles are enabled by default during playback (see the screen below). These included subtitles can significantly affect the load, and not always there are enough device resources to display them. I recommend turning them off when playing - on many tablets the video often stops slowing down at all!

Subtitles included

In general, ideally, instead of standard applications, it is necessary to consider alternative options (about them below) ...

Use alternative browsers

Having tried dozens of browsers on not the most productive tablets, I settled on two: Dolphin and Opera (classic version, no Mini ...). Why?..

Dolphin

Google Play - //play.google.com/

A very fast and lightweight browser that comes with an ad blocker. It has its own built-in flash player, a well-developed and user-friendly design, and most importantly, good optimization with all popular services and sites: YouTube, Amazon, Wikipedia, etc. It plays videos perfectly (no hesitation, no slowdowns, no freezes). In general, I definitely recommend to meet you!

Opera

Google Play: //play.google.com/

Convenient, fast and secure browser. Note that I would recommend using the classic version (and not Mini and other "derivatives"). The browser is quite well optimized for playing streaming video (although, in my opinion, Dolphin loses). But be that as it may, an order of magnitude better than the standard applications "YouTube" or "Browser".

Downloading by third-party apps (background updates)

Perhaps this is the most common reason why the tablet (smartphone) slows down, and not only when playing video. The fact is that when some newer versions of installed applications appear, the tablet can independently start updating them, and, of course, if a video is launched at this time, it is very likely that lags will appear.

The easiest way to find out which applications are currently running, how much free RAM (and how much of it is in total) can be found in the settings of the tablet / smartphone in the section "Applications (running)" (see screenshot below).

How much RAM and how much of it is free

Ideally, for comfortable playback of videos, at least 500 MB of RAM should be free (more -> better). Look carefully at the list of applications, and all that is not required at this point in time - just close.

Alternatively, you can try to simply restart the tablet (note: hold down the power button for 3-5 seconds, until the system "window" appears).

You can also learn about software updates from the top panel: pay attention to the upper left corner. If you "expand" the corner of the panel, you can see the current "state" of affairs.

Background tasks, app updates, etc.

The premise of this part of the article: close all unnecessary and unused at the moment to maximize the device's resources for playing streaming video.

Slow internet / no connection

If your internet speed is less than the bitrate of the streaming video, then the tablet will play the video faster than it loads. As a result, every 10-30 seconds, playback will stop for 3-5 seconds, reload (note: the so-called buffering), and then play again.

Addition!

For high-quality playback of 720p (1080p) online video, an Internet channel of at least 15-20 Mbps is required.

A tip for improving playback: Open and pause the video. Within a minute or two, a part of the video will be loaded and you can start playing it (if the video is long, you may have to pause it 1-2 times to watch it without frequent annoying lags).

In smartphones / tablets, by the way, for a quick assessment of the network status - you can pay attention to the corresponding icon in the corner of the screen (settings) See the screenshot below.

What's with the connection ...

But in general, if you approach the question objectively, it is better to test speed using special services. The fact is that often the declared Internet speed can differ significantly from the real one (sometimes several times!). I give a link to better services below.

Important!

To check the speed of the Internet (both on a tablet and on a PC), I recommend using these services: //ocomp.info/kak-uznat-skorost-interneta.html#i-5

As I said above, to watch videos in 720p (1080p) quality, you need an Internet speed of at least 15 Mbps (preferably 20 Mbps). If during testing your speed turns out to be slower, then the problem is obvious ...

By the way, if your tablet is connected to a Wi-Fi network, then it would not be superfluous to enter the settings of the router and check if there are any restrictions, if the entire channel is not "taken away" by any device.

Note! In some routers, you can limit the speed for each device separately. It is very convenient when "some" loved ones download "Santa Barbara" for themselves ...

PS

By the way, if your online video also slows down on your computer, I recommend that you familiarize yourself with this note: //ocomp.info/tormozit-onlayn-video-v-internete.html

That's all. Additions on the topic are welcome.

Less lags everyone and good luck!
