How to rip video from DVD to AVI or MP4 format (720p, FullHD, etc.) [Movavi Converter]

Good day!

Despite the still great popularity of DVDs, it should be admitted that little by little, many popular classic media (be it CD, DVD, flash drives, etc.) started playing with modern compact external HDDs and cloud drives. 👀

Yes, they will not disappear from the market at all, but you must admit that keeping an entire shelf of disks at home (and some have a cabinet) is not entirely reasonable when they can all be placed, if not in the "cloud", then at least on one small external HDD ( the size of a phone). 😉

Disk shelf versus external HDD

Over the past 3-4 years, I myself have overtaken most of all the DVDs I need to external HDDs - which I do not regret (and there is more free space, and less dust is collected, and new PCs / laptops come without a drive at all ...) .

In general, you can copy information from a DVD in different ways: make an image of it, just copy / paste in the explorer, compress using special. programs.

The latter option, in my opinion, is the most preferable: the output video is smaller due to a better codec for compression (video on DVD is stored in VOB format, which does not provide the same compression as, say, the modern MP4 codec. More on this) , moreover, with the same quality.

Actually, in this article I will consider one of the most preferred options, how you can quickly and without unnecessary fuss overtake DVD to AVI (or MP4).

So...

Step by step rip DVD to AVI / MP4

1) Selecting the "tool".

There are quite a few programs for performing this task now. But in this article I decided to focus on one rather interesting product - "Movavi Video Converter".

Orig. name:Movavi Converter

Officer. website: //www.movavi.ru/

Software description page: //www.movavi.ru/support/how-to/how-to-convert-vob-video.html

You can read the full description and all the features of the program on the official website. Here I will also point out the most important advantages of the converter, which are very necessary for solving the current task (and which, by the way, are lacking in many competitors):

  1. The conversion process is very fast: it takes 5-10 minutes for one movie (for example) 1.5-2 hours long! (Of course, a lot depends on the settings you choose and the original video quality, but the average figures for 4 disks I got the same, and on not the fastest laptop with an I3-5005U) .
  2. it can find all videos on DVD automatically (i.e. no manual work, and no additional utilities need to be searched for! Just pointed the drive and got a list of videos) ;
  3. there are "preset" presets for video compression (ie, you can immediately select MP4 720p and do not need to configure anything yourself. Convenient!) ;
  4. all videos on DVD can be easily combined into one output video (i.e. if you have 3-4 files on your disc, they can be overtaken into 1 AVI video!);
  5. the program is completely in Russian.

Note: video converted in the free version of the program will show a small ad text every minute (a little annoying). Also pay attention to a couple of checkboxes during installation. For the rest, there are no complaints ...

2) DVD selection

And so, the program is installed, launched. Insert the DVD into the tray, and in the "Movavi Converter" select the letter of your drive from the following path: "Add Files / Add DVD / D:"(drive letter may be different from mine) .

Add DVD

3) We set aside only the desired video (i.e. only what will be converted)

In a few seconds, the program will present all the videos it found on the DVD. You need to close everything that you do not need (see the screen below, it shows the required "cross").

List of found files on disk

4) Select the format for compression (output video)

Next, at the bottom of the program window, you need to select the format into which you want to compress the video.What is very convenient is the presence of pre-installed popular templates:

  • MP4 720p (HD);
  • MP4 FullHD;
  • Android -1280x720, etc.

Different video formats for converting (clickable)

Note that pre-built templates are available for many popular devices. For example, you can convert video for TV or set-top box.

Please also note that videos can be converted for specific devices (clickable)

By the way, one more positive point: if you look more closely at the line with the video, you will see, depending on the choice of the format for compression, the output size will change (i.e. the program automatically calculates it right away). A very convenient moment, by the way, you can immediately convert the video to a specific size!

You can immediately see the final size (it was - it is)

5) Select a save destination and start converting

Well, and the final touch before clicking on the "Start" button - there are a couple of interesting things next to it:

  1. you can select the location on the disk where the finished video will be saved (by default, the video is saved to the "My Videos" system folder, which is preinstalled by default in Windows) ;
  2. you can enable the option to combine all videos on DVD into one (very useful in some cases).

Choosing where to save the resulting video, start button

After starting converting, the program will automatically calculate the time to complete the work. In my example (screenshot below), it took her about 6 minutes to convert one movie (1.5 hours long).

Please note that a 1.5 hour video is copied in 6-7 minutes

6) Done!

Actually, as a result, the video was quickly "distilled" from DVD into a regular AVI file. By the way, "Movavi Converter" upon completion of work will signal you with a sound and will automatically open the folder where the video was saved. Conveniently!

AVI video finished

That's all, the task, as I believe, is completed ...
