How to number pages in Word (including from the 2nd page, from the 3rd, etc.)

Good day!

Whatever document you draw up, but if it has more than 2-3 pages, then you almost always have to number them (at least, even so that afterwards you do not get confused with them yourself ).

A worse option is when you need to correctly draw up a document, because it must be taken for verification (whether it be during study or work). And often, at the same time, it is necessary to number pages not from the first sheet, but from the 2nd page (sometimes from the third). Actually, in this article I want to consider how this can be done without hassle and nerves.

So...

Numbering pages in Word documents

Actual for versions of Word 2019, 2016 (for 2013, 2010, 2007 - the menu is slightly different)

Classic version

And so, the most common option: when we just need to add page numbers (at the top or bottom of the sheet).

To do this, open the section "Insert" , select tab "Page numbers" and indicate the desired location: top, bottom, side, etc. In general, here, as a rule, no one has any problems ...

Insert - page number

In my example, I chose the classic version: page numbers go to the left in the upper corner (see screenshot below).

Numbers affixed

Numbering from the 2nd page

This is most often required when the first page will be the title page (or you need to place a table of contents on it).

And so, we will assume that the document has already been numbered (as in the example above).

Now you need to click on the number on the first page ("1", see example below) to open the "Constructor".

Click on the numbering of the first sheet

Further, in the "Constructor" section, in the "Parameters" subsection, indicate that you will have a special header and footer (see the screenshot below). After that, the number on the 1st page will disappear ...

In the constructor, enable a special header and footer for the first page

If numbering is needed from the 3rd or any other page (universal option)

In my example below, I will leave the numbering from the 3rd page (if you need to do it on a different one, follow the steps in the same way with a small "amendment" ...).

First, you need to put the cursor at the end of the 2nd page and go to the "Layout" section (see the screen below).

We put the cursor at the end of the 2nd page

Next, you need to choose "Next page" in the "Breaks" tab.

Layout - next page

Then select the page number "3" (so that the "Constructor" section appears), and in the "Transitions" subsection, unlink "As in the previous section" .

As in the previous section (remove this connection!)

Then select the page number "2" (or "1) and press the Delete key.

Remove numbering from the first pages

As a result, the numbers of the first two pages will be deleted, and on the third (and further) they will remain, as in my example (see screenshot).

As a result, the numbers only go from the 3rd page

If you know how to do this even easier - share in the comments (writing numbers with a pencil / pen does not count! ).

That's all for now!

Good luck!
